Michael is an associate professor in the School of Applied Human Sciences at the University of Northern Iowa, and currently serves as the Director of Research and Evaluation at the Center for Violence Prevention. His scholarship, teaching and community engagement focuses on the dynamics associated with interpersonal violence and high conflict relationships; systemic models of prevention and early intervention in gender violence; workforce development and education for victim service providers and educators and secondary trauma and vicarious victimization among such providers. He serves on the Iowa Department of Public Health Domestic and Sexual Violence Advisory Board, Iowa Commission on the Status of Women; has served on state and regional level task forces on sexual violence prevention and on the Board of Directors for community sexual and domestic violence service agencies.
