Sexual Violence in Conflict: United Nations’ Jurisdiction and Response

The Center for Violence Prevention graciously welcomes Officer Martin Permen to the University of Northern Iowa.
Martin Permen is an officer with the Swedish police and serves on the Team of Experts on the Rule of Law within the Office of Special Representative for Secretary General on Sexual Violence in Conflict at the United Nations in New York City, New York. The Team of Experts support leading dignitaries and officials from warring countries in their efforts to develop policies and protocol to combat sexual violence in conflict.
Officer Permen has served as a Swedish police officer for 25 years. During his service, he has worked closely with victims and perpetrators of sexual and domestic violence. As an investigator of sexual violence, Officer Permen’s experiences have included conducting investigations, interviewing victims, witnesses and suspects, collecting forensic evidence and enhancing victim protection and support services such as safe housing and access to emergency communication systems.
